VCR Cleaning - Open Your VCR Case

First Things First, Open Your VCR

Wash and dry your hands. Naturally occurring oils from your hands can foul contacts or boards. Unplug the VCR and unhook it from the television set.

On the back of the VCR, remove the screws that hold the cover on. Place all the screws in a plastic bag or dish and slide the cover off.

Different brands of VCRs have different screw configurations (and maybe even some clips) so keep track!

Dust the Inside

The floor of your VCR can hold dirt, which moves onto the tape path.

Turn the machine on it's front corner on some newspapers or an old towel. Tip it so dust does not fall on circuit boards or the tape path. Don't rest the VCR on anything that might break, like remote sensors (these receive signals from the remote control). Gently brush away accumulated dust. Be careful not to get the brush into any lubricants that might be on the VCR floor.

Compressed air also works well when applied gently. Those "cans of air" are good for limited usage, but always keep them in an upright position. Otherwise liquid propellant can come out instead of air. You don't want that stuff in there!
