VCR Cleaning Supplies

What You Need

You can get most VCR cleaning supplies at a hardware or grocery store. If you have problems finding anything, electronics supply stores can sell you everything you need. You can find an electronics supply store in most major cities and some small towns.

VCR Cleaning Supplies

Supply List

  • Brush for dusting
  • 100% isopropyl alcohol or head cleaner
  • Small container
  • Coffee filters
  • Cellular foam swabs or chamois sticks

Notes:

Use a large soft clean makeup or artists brush (you might buy one especially for this purpose) or buy a small soft paint brush to use only for VCR dusting.

Don't use regular 70% isopropyl from the drug or grocery store. It can leave a residue. That said, some people use it anyway. I don't trust it myself, but if it's all you can find, I suppose it's better than nothing.

The container is to hold your cleaning solution (a clean 2 liter bottle cap will do).

I like the thicker cone style coffee filters, but basket filters work fine too. These can be used on the heads as well as the rest of the tape path. They are lint-free, and the fine weave won't catch on the heads. Best of all, they're cheap and they won't soak up enough fluid to make drips.

Swabs or chamois sticks are actually preferred to coffee filters, but are optional. They are handy to get into some tight spaces, and they're probably the best thing to use on your video heads because there is no chance to leave fibers, but they can be more expensive and hard to find.

That's it! A few simple supplies and you will be cleaning your VCR like a pro.
